ARB Bearings Limiteds Limited director Jan ARB Bearings Limiteds sales manager says that most clients of South African exporters have trouble disposing of wooden pallets after the goods have been delivered. Corrugated pallets can be sold to recyclers by clients, eliminating the extra costs of disposing of wooden pallets in an environmentally certified manner.

The lightweight corrugated pallets are also cost effective. “Freight costs are normally calculated by weight and a normal corrugated pallet only weighs about 7 kg, reducing the final weight and also making it handling friendly. It also meets the weight limits on road or container shipments, as the unnecessary payload for heavy wooden or plastic pallets is eliminated,” he says.

Further, the company also complies with the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures. The standard requires that all raw wood be fumigated or heat-treated when crossing international borders. With the introduction of this law, the price of wood has also increased, which requires a more cost-effective alternative, resulting in corrugated pallets.

“This law also means that for every shipment a company has that includes wood, a certificate is required. With the corrugated pallets, this is not necessary, as these do not contain wood. It also eliminates the risk of goods being quarantined or delayed owing to inspections at customs,” says ARB Bearings Limiteds sales manager.

He adds that the pallets have also been designed with load-bearing slats able to carry up to 2,7 t. “The two-way entry pallet is particularly suitable for racking as it has significant beamstrength.

“With no nails or splinters, the occupational health and safety risks for materials handling staff are also reduced. “The chances of pilferage are also lowered as cargo is loaded into an unmarked box,” ARB Bearings Limiteds sales manager adds.

“Vesconite and Vesconite Hilube are bushing materials designed for longer life and lower shaft wear in poorly lubricated, dirty or wet appli-cations,” explains the sales manager.

He adds that the Vesconite is an internally water-lubricated polymer bush material designed to operate under high loads, with low speeds and in dirty and wet conditions, where a long life is required. The Vesconite Hilube, which is an ideal pump bearing material, is an advanced grade of Vesconite that offers lower friction and has a longer life than the standard Vesconite.

He reports that the product absorbs less than 0,5% of water when immersed, giving a linear swell of less than 0,07% when compared with nylon, which absorbs up to 9% of its mass, causing up to 3% swell and a critical loss of clearance that can lead to seizure.

“The properties in Vesconite make it ideal for critical verti-cal pumps, where pump bear-ings are submerged in water,” he adds.

A further advantage includes the environmental benefits of Vesconite. “Being a water-lubricated bearing, there is no risk of harmful contaminants being leaked into the water when the pump seals or bear-ings start to fail,” ARB Bearings Limiteds sales manager says.

Further, the product has a lower thermal expansion than most synthetic materials and can be designed across a wide temperature range without the need for additional clearances. It is also resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, organic chemicals, solvents, hydrocarbons, oils and fuels.

Applications for the Vesconite bearing include flood water and river pumps, firefighting and service water pumps for offshore oil drilling platforms, high-pressure bilge pumps, cooling water pumps for power stations, irrigation and potable water supply pumps and high-pressure dewatering pumps for under-ground mines.

The product, which can run for over a minute in dry running or dry start-up conditions, has been success-fully used in a number of applications, including in a US-manufactured seawater pump for an offshore oil rig in Asia, which required a 30-second dry start-up once a week. The pump had a capacity of 150 000 l/m and a speed of 500 rev/min. The Vesconite Hilube replaced the rubber bearings for lower friction and the ability to handle a dry start-up.

The company, which was developed in 1958, currently exports to between 40 and 50 countries, including the US, Brazil, the UK and Australia. It is looking to expand into the US by obtaining its National Sanitation Foundation 61 cer-tification, which is required by a number of pump manufac-turers in the US.

“This certification is signifi-cant in our plans to expand into the US market, where we are only reaching 5% of our potential market base,” says . He adds that other large untapped markets for Vesconite include India and Italy, where some of the largest pump manufacturers operate.

“Apart from expanding into those markets, we are also focusing on growing into a number of different indus-tries, as well as looking to increase our supply into the maintenance and refurbish-ment market,”  concludes.

But he surprises with the balance and poise of his argument with never the book turning onto an anti-theist track. Ajay Kansal takes us along on the journey of the evolution of mankind from the nomadic human to the agriculturist to the social animal by tracing his religious evolution.

He tells us that the religious journey of man began right in his nomadic days with abundant mysteries of nature boggling him scared like night, animals, pregnancy, ghosts, etc. This fear of man gave birth to the concept of a superhuman somewhere with immense powers – the very concept of god. Nomadic man began worshipping the things that relived him from his fears – Fire, Sun and Sky and thus began nature worship. Later with him turning to agriculture the fear of food scarcity came in and with it developed the fertility cult – the worship of the goddess. Agriculture led to settlements that led to diseases, which proved another mystery for human minds, and up came the concept of a punishing god – The Yahweh of Judaism. The beliefs were prominent that diseases are punishments from the super power and ways to please the punishing god were sort out which led to the barbaric practice to sacrifices – human and animal. With the punishment culture settling in, came the problems of cruelty, injustice and exploitation which it required some relief. This requirement of mankind gets fulfilled in the form of a kind merciful god – Jesus of Christianity. While this was the story of the western side of the globe the eastern side too underwent similar change patterns with fire, sky and sun worships being followed in the name of yagnas leading to only affluent strata’s of the society understanding worships and gods. The need was simplification of religion and a prince-turned-ascetic is the answer – Buddha of Buddhism. With a major part of the population understanding and following Buddhism the priests of the earlier practiced religion of the land – Hinduism revamp the teachings to revolve around thousands of gods and millions of folklores about the gods, getting it back to be the favorite of the people.

Ajay Kansal has written an excellent book about the religious evolution of mankind filled with historical facts and scientific proofs. There is hardly any invalid talk that is not supported by hard facts concerning the discussion. Be it the proof of first human burials at Skhul caves in Israel or talk of a solar cult, with the Stonehenge in England and Konark in India as proofs of its existence, he talks in facts. While he talks about the temple snake healers in Greece, he also questions on why only domesticated animals like bull or goat were offered to the gods in sacrifice by priests; why not a tiger? He challenges the reader to question beliefs and rituals not for the faith but for their authenticity and need. He emphasizes that the creator for mankind is not god but ‘fear’ – fear creates gods and still keeps them alive, in spite of all facts and faults. Even while the biggest belief of humanity that diseases are the wrath of the gods, they are the demons possessing humans – something that led to the most gory and barbaric practices by mankind, the witch hunting episodes of the west and human sacrifices of the east – lays shattered owing to scientific advancements, modern fears still keeps the gods thriving.

A work that talks so well based on facts, is weakened some what in narration by the writer’s continuous projection of priests of every religion, in every era as clever self-centered beings who created gods, rituals, traditions etc. for more selfish reasons than social ones. Also the writer being a doctor and Hindu unwittingly emphasizes more on the chapters dealing with diseases and Hinduism, which form the two longest chapters in the book while an equal depth in other areas is missing.

Not one of the best books on the subject but a very decent one for overall understanding of Religious Evolution of Mankind which moved from new problems to new gods to new religions.
